Re-Envisioning Election Mapping 2008

Description

Buy this Map

Third Place: 2012 National Geographic Map Awards

This election map takes the essential elements of the election and shows only that. Each county is symbolized as a circle proportional to the number of voters in that county. The shading of the circle represents the percentage of votes in favor of either candidate. Counties that voted towards the middle have more transparency since their overall impact on the election would be less than a county heavily in favor of one candidate.

This symbology method was chosen with a purpose. Humans interpret certain visual signs in different ways. These symbols align with the natural visual cues the brain responds to, to best show the data of an election.
